Apathetic Christians Elect Pro-Abortion Politician
Thursday, April 01, 2004

You know what really drives me crazy? It’s not smokers who selfishly toss their cigarettes out of their cars, littering our San Antonio roads. It’s not people who have the table manners of two-year-olds and chew with their mouths open. And it’s not even people who haven’t walked down the deodorant aisle at H-E-B for 20 years, as disgusting as that is.

No, it’s far worse!

What really drives me crazy is Christians who don’t vote. Yet, even with the luxury of two weeks’ worth of time to vote early, we still drive past the polling places with shockingly callous disregard as if voting were inconsequential and irrelevant. How sad!

What a striking contrast to the views of our Founding Fathers. They envisioned America to be a New Jerusalem, a city set on a hill, a light to the nations.
You see, the reason I’m so miffed right now about lazy Christians, is that we had an unparalleled opportunity during the Tuesday, March 9th Primary to fire Democratic Congressman Ciro Rodriguez from District 28. And we blew it!

If only 171 more Christians would have voted for Ciro’s opponent Henry Cuellar in one of 11 counties including Bexar, we could have helped to protect unborn boy and girls from abortion and helped to stop the radical homosexual agenda. 171 lousy votes.

Did you realize that the March 9th primary only drew 8.5 percent of Bexar County’s registered voters? That is absolutely pathetic!

Who is Congressman Ciro Rodriguez? His values mirror the American Atheists more than the Body of Christ. He’s more comfortable with the ACLU than the ACLJ. He’s happier with the pro-death lobby than a crisis pregnancy center. And Ciro is more likely to advocate San Francisco values than those from San Antone. Bottom line: When it comes to representing Biblical values, Ciro scores a Zero!

• Ciro voted against the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, a bill to recognize the unborn child as a legal victim when he or she is injured or killed during the commission of a federal crime of violence in April, 2001.

• Ciro voted for abortion funding in federal prisons in July, 2001 and for abortions in military medical facilities in September, 2001.

• Most egregiously, Ciro voted in July, 2002 against The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act which banned the abortion method in which a living baby is partly delivered alive outside the mother’s body before being killed through a puncture in the back of the neck and suction of the child’s brains through a catheter.
But, need I remind you, on March 9th, Christians had another option, a good option in Henry Cuellar, Ciro’s opponent, in the Democrat primary for U.S. Congress, District 28.

Cuellar, a Laredo lawyer, former Texas State Representative from 1987-2001 and former Texas Secretary of State, stood clearly with Christians on the social issues.

When Henry Cuellar was a Texas State Representative he supported, to his credit, pro-life bills like parental notification and informed consent for women. Plus, Cuellar categorically stated on my talk show that he opposes homosexual marriage and favors a Federal Marriage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
If just the readers to this column would have gone to the polls and cast their votes for Henry Cuellar, we could have given him the political victory which he deserved!
It’s time for us to recall the words of Christ Himself: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”

Have you lost your saltiness?

“TAKE A STAND” ACTION STEPS:
1. If you’re not registered to vote, call the Elections Division Hotline at 1-800-252-VOTE (8683) or go on line:http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/reqvr.shtml. You need to get registered 30 days before an election.
2. If you are registered and you’ve been sitting out one election after the other, get informed. Download voter guides at www.freemarket.org or www.texascc.org. Plus, I always feature most of the candidates on my show and e-mail my personal picks to those who subscribe to my e-mail alert at www.TakeAStand.net.
3. We need some people who will step up to the plate and lead the Bexar County Christian Coalition to be able to better inform Christian voters for local races. It has been virtually defunct for years. Call Mike Hannesschlager, the Executive Director of the Texas Christian Coalition, at (817) 427-1881 and volunteer.
